GreenMet’s Chief Geologist, Ned Mamula, Nominated to Lead the U.S. Geological Survey

For Immediate Release

Dr. Ned Mamula

Washington, D.C. – GreenMet is proud to announce that its Chief Geologist, Dr. Ned Mamula, has been formally nominated to serve as the next Director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). With a distinguished career spanning over 30 years in energy, mineral resources, and federal land resource management, Mamula brings unparalleled expertise to this crucial leadership position. His appointment at the USGS would usher in a new era of scientific innovation focused on America’s strategic resources and critical minerals.

Mamula’s academic credentials are distinguished. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy (Energy and Mineral Resource Policy) from Johns Hopkins University; a Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics (Structural and Petroleum Geology) from Texas A&M University; a M.S. in Structural and Economic Geology from Pennsylvania State University; and a B.S. in Geosciences from Slippery Rock University.

Since joining GreenMet, Mamula has played a pivotal role in leading the company’s efforts on critical mineral policy, resource evaluation, and geological due diligence. As Chief Geologist, he has spearheaded initiatives that directly influence mineral exploration, mining practices, and innovative technological advancements in the industry. His work involves not only evaluating mineral deposits for investment decisions but also driving policy research in the critical mineral sector, which is integral to U.S. energy and economic security.

Mamula’s extensive public service experience includes a significant tenure at the Department of Energy (DOE), where he served as Program Director for Critical Minerals contract with LTI. In this capacity, he was instrumental in establishing the DOE’s Mineral Sustainability Division in 2021. Mamula also led the development of critical mineral and rare earth geologic modeling, directly supporting national energy strategies and resource management.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Mamula has been a trusted voice regarding the U.S. Geological Survey, where he began his career, contributing to critical research on energy and mineral resource evaluation in the Survey’s Conservation Division, and later as a researcher in the Geologic Division. He also provided key geoscience expertise to the Department of Homeland Security in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, playing a pivotal role in safeguarding U.S. energy infrastructure.

Mamula also had a successful career in the private sector, contributing to major international exploration projects for companies like Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Frontera Resources, and First Seismic Corporation. His work in the Caspian Basin, Black Sea Basin, and other oil and gas exploration regions has made a significant contribution to global resource assessments and exploration methodologies. He has published on the energy and mineral sectors and is the author of two influential books on critical minerals: Groundbreaking! America’s Quest for Mineral Independence (2018) and Undermining Power—How to Overthrow Mineral, Energy, Economic & National Security Disinformation (2024). His expertise and thought leadership have been widely recognized by academic, governmental, and private-sector organizations alike.

Dr. Mamula’s nomination to lead the U.S. Geological Survey comes at a critical time, as the U.S. faces increasing challenges related to energy and mineral security, especially domestic mining production versus import over-reliance for critical minerals and the technology metals they contain. His leadership at USGS will be instrumental in strengthening the nation’s scientific infrastructure, geological research, resource evaluation, and production of those resources to achieve energy dominance and mineral security, both of which are pillars of American national security.
